Mike Leigh returns to his old stomping ground at Hampstead Theatre, where ‘Abigail’s Party’ premiered 34 years ago. The new production of ‘Ecstasy’, Leigh’s 1979 friends re-united comedy which started life at Hampstead Theatre Club, starts previews this week. Leigh directs relative newcomers as the group of friends getting pissed in a Kilburn bedsit. But it’s worth remembering that in the original production 32 years ago Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Stephen Rea and Ron Cook were themselves newcomers.
