Words (and some excellent trivia) from The Idler’s Tom Hodgkinson (aka The Headmaster): “I have heard tell that some of you are mumbling that there is a contradiction between the aims of The Idler and the aims of The Idler Academy. Surely school and idleness are mutually incompatible? Well, that may be largely true today, but I’d like to remind you that the word ‘school’ actually originally meant ‘idleness’ in Greek. It was later that it turned into our word for ‘school’. So not only are the aims of schooling and idling the same, they are precisely the same thing! And you might say that ‘school for school’s sake’ could be a motto of the Academy.”
Tickets for Gavin Pretor-Pinney’s ‘The Art of Cloud Collecting’ lecture tomorrow are available. For info, see The Idler Academy listing.
