If you haven’t been living in a cave lately, you will know that the Festival of Britain launches this Friday (to Sept 4) at the Southbank Centre, but you may not know exactly what it is. The 4 month celebration of all things British marks the 60th anniversary of the original 1951 post-war fête for the masses. A myriad of cultural hubs in the area take part with exhibitions, talks and shows; some must be booked, others are free (we’ll keep you posted on some of these). The Southbank itself is transformed into 4 ‘lands’ – ‘People of Britain’, ‘Land of Britain’, ‘Sea & Ships’, ‘Power & Production’ – which take inspiration from the original exhibition. Beach huts and fairground rides are open to all. Consider it a grand union.
