As serious gourmands know, cider is so much more than a default fizzy festival drink served on ice. The success of brands like Magners and the like have popularised the drink, but for a real taste of what can be achieved with fermented apples and pears, the Real English Cider & perry Festival taking place this weekend (Fri-Mon) in the Alma in Newington Green is worth a visit. There will be 20 different English ciders and perries to taste from 6 houses– pints are a decent £3, half-pints £1.50, and there are discounts for Camra members. Entry is free.
