Jazz legend Charlie Haden plays Barbican Centre

Posted at 4:30 pm, May 16, 2011 in Music & Nightlife

© Steven PerillouxOnce in the vanguard of the 1960s free jazz revolution alongside Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry – cutting the influential ‘The Shape Of Jazz To Come’ – some 50 years on, bassist Charlie Haden is nothing short of a living legend. A star collaborator with the likes of Pat Metheny, Brad Mehldau, Jan Garbarek and latterly Keith Jarrett, Haden’s in town for 2 special nights this week. First up with his sublime Quartet West on a vocal-led set with smoky-voiced chanteuse Melody Gardot and the soulful Liane Carroll, then with his brilliant modern jazz Liberation Orchestra featuring a stellar cast of international players.

For info, see Charlie Haden And Quartet West/Melody Gardot/Ruth Cameron listing.
