Plenty of videogames have you playing as a cop – putting bullets into hundreds of perps – but not many have you actually solving crimes. On the surface L.A. Noire is like the Grand Theft Auto franchise: offering as it does a massive city to explore by car or on foot as you tote a weapon. But the most important part of your arsenal is your notebook. Each main mission has you scouring a crime scene for clues which propel your investigation forward. You’ll even interview witnesses or suspects and decide if they’re being straight with you. It’s intelligent, exciting and refreshingly different. All the clues point to an open-and-shut case of an instant classic.
