According to legend, on July 4 1916, 4 immigrants had a hotdog eating battle at Nathan’s Famous restaurant on New York’s Coney Island to establish who was the most patriotic: the restaurant’s annual competition now has over 40,000 spectators. Camden hub The Blues Kitchen hosts a similar (though smaller) event on July 4 (from 8pm) in which contestants must chow down as many hotdogs as possible whilst spectators look on. American-style supper is served, live rhythm and blues music follows and Americans who show a valid passport get a free drink.
