There may be a shortage of retailer variety on the high street these days, but Duke Of Uke emporium in Spitalfields has certainly been doing its bit for idiosyncratic specialty shopping and services over the past 5 years. As you might guess, its main focus is ukuleles but it sells other instruments besides, plus accessories, books, CDs and DVDs. Due to a tenancy disagreement, it – along with in-house recording studio Soup – faces eviction. To that effect, the Duke stages 3 gigs in the crypt at Christ Church Spitalfields to raise money for a move to a new premises. The first is this Thursday and sees alt popsters ‘The Wave Pictures’ line up with ‘Tigercats’ and others. On Friday, the bill is topped by former ‘Hefner’ mainman, Darren Hayman, while on Saturday (an all-dayer from 1pm) rowdy garage punks ‘The London Dirthole Company’ take top spot.
