BFI Southbank © GuernicaNow a youthful 89 year-old, Alain Resnais is one of France’s most lauded modern auteurs and BFI give him the full career retrospective he deserves. There’s everything, from shorts he made in the early ’50s (including ‘Guernica’ above), to the modernist thinkpiece ‘Last Year at Marienbad’, to the verbose and pristinely structured dramas of the ’80s and loopy modern comedies like 2009’s triumphant ‘Wild Grass’. Many of the titles, like his 1996 Alan Ayckbourn collaboration, ‘Smoking/No Smoking’, are not yet available on DVD, so make an effort to see them on the big screen now.
