As London prepares for the annual Notting Hill Carnival in 5 weeks’ time, one of its sonic linchpins, Norman Jay MBE – who is synonymous with the UK’s largest street party – has announced that his Good Times sound system will not be appearing for the first time in 30 years. Jay celebrates 3 decades of his Carnival party with a new compilation on Strut Records (out next Monday) but despite the anniversary, the legendary crate digger and his iconic party bus are still missing out on this year’s festivities. Good Times will not host an official after-party this August either. On his blog, Jay explained that ‘a myriad of extenuating circumstances, some of which were simply beyond our control’ were behind their ‘gap year’, yet he urged ‘dedicated music and party loving fans’ to not let the disappointing news stop them from going to Carnival this summer.
