‘It’s difficult to put into words at this moment all the emotions we’re feeling about the unprecedented levels of civil disobedience that have swept through London in the last three days and nights. This beautiful city that we love and are passionate about has descended into a form of collective madness. The rioting and looting, violence and arson are symptomatic of the fact that there is something terribly wrong in our society. The reasons behind the rioters’ inexcusable antisocial actions are complex – and it’s inappropriate to attempt to distill them into soundbites or broad generalisations. Now is not the time for our leaders to be using what has happened to score political points. Now is the time for London to come together, to find some kind of peace and to take a breath. Keep calm, stay safe and don’t let the voices of gossip or hatred fuel fear or despair. We are still here, still covering London and we still believe this is the greatest city in the world. But we must learn from this and build a future we can all be proud of.’
