‘Tower Heist’ trailer released: is this the Eddie Murphy comeback?

Eddie Murphy in Meet DaveAnyone who was alive in the ’80s remembers what a revelation Eddie Murphy was in movies like ’48 Hrs.’, ‘Trading Places’ and ‘Beverly Hills Cop’: not just the first major black action star, but one of the most inventive and forthright comedians on the circuit. Then it all went wrong: despite the occasional choice role in ‘Bowfinger’ and ‘Dreamgirls’, for the past 2 decades Murphy has largely restricted himself to family fodder, low-rent comedies and dubious tabloid appearances. Could forthcoming action comedy ‘Tower Heist’ mark a turnaround? With oft-maligned ‘Rush Hour’ director Brett Ratner behind the camera it may seem unlikely, but take a look at this trailer: not just Murphy, but Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Tea Leoni, Alan Alda, a strong, timely high-concept plot and some good jokes. We’re keeping our fingers crossed until the film’s release on November 4.

Want to watch some classic Murphy? Book tickets a double bill of ’48 Hours and ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ on August 22 at the Prince Charles Cinema.
