It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard anything from director Bruce Robinson, the man behind the much-loved British swear/drink/thesp-fest, ‘Withnail & I’. This new film version of Hunter S Thompson’s ‘The Rum Diary’ heralds his big return, and he’s also managed to rope in the estimable Johnny Depp as his leading man. Yet, the film has been floating in the release schedule ether for some time now and excitement has long since morphed into mild trepidation. This first trailer looks like it could well be a big, brassy star-driven comedy, but frankly, Robinson (who’s also adapted the screenplay) looks like he may have taken some tonal liberties with Thompson’s brash and pessimistic source novel. Take a look and tell us if you agree.
