Liberty festival celebrates the contribution of deaf and disabled people to London, and rounds off the 60th Festival of Britain at the Southbank. The annual Liberty Festival takes over National Theatre Square today (1-5pm) as part of the Watch This Space festival, showcasing an array of music, dance, circus, cinema and performance art devised by disabled and deaf people. With strong backing from Boris Johnson, the event is happening just days after the ‘one year to go’ mark before London’s Paralympic Games 2012. This year’s highlights include Mark Smith’s Deaf Men Dancing, Anya Ustaszewski’s sound installation using ‘found noise’ and Jean-Marie Akkerman’s spectacular Cirque Nova featuring disabled aerialists. The Liberty Festival is also one of the final events of the 60th Festival of Britain so make the most of this riverside party.
