101 Things to do in London: Chime in with the Whitechapel Bell Foundry

Posted at 7:00 am, September 24, 2011 in Arts & Entertainment

Chime in at the Whitechapel Bell FoundryThe Time Out team has compiled a list of 101 ultimate things to do in London; each week we’ll highlight one as inspiration for your weekend fun. In the bell-making business since 1570, the Whitechapel Bell Foundry is responsible for some of the country’s most famous bells, including the 13½ tonne Big Ben bell, the 10 bells of Westminster Abbey and the 13 at Liverpool Cathedral. Even Philadephia’s Liberty Bell came from this hidden East End gem which still proudly makes and supplies church bells, fittings for clock towers and hand-bells. A lovely range of artifacts and a full historical biography are on display in the foyer museum of the shop on Whitechapel Road they’ve called home since 1670. Ding dong.
