We’re sad to hear that London’s original gay and lesbian vegetarian café First Out, situated underneath Centre Point, has just announced that it will close on October 29, due to a rent increase. It follows the closure of The Box, Kudos and other gay venues in the West End. First opened in 1987, the cafe’s glass front marked a breakaway from the blacked-out windows of most gay venues and pre-empted the bright and breezy gay bar culture of the 90s. First Out wasn’t without its critics with disgruntled punters complaining about the service, but it remained popular, earning numerous ‘scene’ awards as recently as 2010. We’ll hate to see it go.
