The pub quiz is now firmly established as one of the cornerstones of British society, with not even the advent of the smartphone diminishing competition between rival teams of boffins. Over the last few years, a number of specialist film quizzes have emerged, hoping to draw in cinephiles (and those with no interest in how many UK football teams have the letter ‘J’ in their name) from across the capital with the promise of film nerd glory. On October 16 (7.30-10pm), New Empress Magazine holds its first film quiz at Bermondsey’s Shortwave Cinema, involving trivia from the silent era onwards, picture rounds and, for the dramatically inclined, scene re-enactments from film classics. What’s more, the first 50 to book tickets receive a free screening of short films (5:30-7pm), courtesy of Double Crossed Films. To celebrate, here’s our run-down of the top London film quizzes.
You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat
Every first Wednesday of the month, the Boogaloo pub in Highgate is host to the You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat Film Quiz. Projected onto a big screen, this hugely popular night updates the good old British pub quiz for the 21st Century.
Roxy Bar and Screen
Held at the Roxy Bar and Screen on Borough High Street on the last Thursday of the month, 6 rounds, 10 questions and a few special bonus rounds help to separate the film buffs from the film bluffs.
The BFI Film Quiz
A more irregular quiz from BFI, hosted at the IMAX Film Café. General film trivia, picture, music and audio-visual rounds, quizzing entrants on the latest BFI offerings, from Peckinpah to Pixar and Bergman to Batman.
Andy Nyman’s Quiz From Hell
A Film4 Frightfest spin-off from the You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat team, presented by horror actor and ‘Dead Set’ star Andy Nyman. Positively ghoulish and devilishly hard – for true gore-hounds only!
Shortwave Cinema, 10 Bermondsey Square, SE1 3UN, (020 7357 6845). Book now for the New Empress Magazine Film Quiz.
