Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids: A Journey through the English Ritual Year

Posted at 10:00 am, October 21, 2011 in Arts & Entertainment

There’s no way anyone could accuse England of lacking in tradition, and Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids are only the tip of the iceberg. This free exhibition at the Horniman Museum from Saturday 22 October (to September 2012) presents around 50 striking photographs by Sarah Hannant which document regional rituals from all over the country. From leafy Jack-in-the-Greens celebrating May Day to folk dancers wearing antlers during the Abbots Bramley Horn Dance, there’s enough English eccentricity to make the green fields at Glastonbury seem as average as a car boot sale.

For info, see Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids listing.
