The most important meal of the day: top 5 breakfast joints

Posted at 10:00 am, November 12, 2011 in Food & Drink

A wise man (or woman) once said ‘All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.’ We couldn’t agree more, especially after a workaday week of wolfing down burnt toast and balancing soggy bran flakes over the keyboard. As the weekend beckons, we’d like to serve up five of our favourites for breakfast with a twist, wherever you wake up in the capital:

Dishoom breakfastCENTRAL: Dishoom
Inspired by the Irani cafes of Mumbai, but with added bacon and sausage. Try a Bombay omelette with a dash of chilli and a steaming mug of chai to put a spring back in your step after a heavy week.
12 Upper St Martin’s Lane, WC2H 9FB
Breakfast served 8am-11am Mon-Fri; 9am-1pm Sat, Sun.

Made in CamdenNORTH: Made in Camden
Barely a year old, this spacious cafe in the famous music venue proffers a rock-star breakfast. Traditionalists won’t be disappointed but the more outlandish can indulge a taste for the exotic with fried eggs on sweet spiced chickpeas with labneh (Middle Eastern yoghurt) and pangrattato (breadcrumbs with a hint of cinnamon).
Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Rd, NW1 8EH
Brunch served 10.30am-3pm Sat, Sun.

Brockwell Lido CafeSOUTH: Lido Café
There’s no hunger quite like the ravenous post-swim growl and luckily you can replace those lost calories within minutes of drying off at Brockwell Lido, with a health-conscious but hearty breakfast array of all things organic, wholemeal and free range.
Brockwell Lido, Dulwich Rd, SE24 0PA
Breakfast served 9am-noon Mon-Fri; 9am-1pm Sat, Sun.

Towpath Cafe © Jason LoweEAST: Towpath (above)
A waterside hide-away serving porridge topped with stewed seasonal fruit to combat the outdoor chill and a moored pavilion that accommodates the inevitable breakfast-overspill from the towpath tables.
Regent’s Canal towpath, between Whitmore Bridge and Kingsland Rd Bridge, N1 5SB
Breakfast served 8am-dusk Tue-Fri; 9am-dusk Sat, Sun.

WEST: Lowry & Baker
Still in its infancy, this one room cafe is the brainchild of the Bruncheon Club, a basement supper club in Hackney that attracted rave reviews for its slap up, sociable breakfasts in the hosts’ own home. Little has changed in the relocation westwards, with the poached eggs and avocado on sourdough as homemade as ever.
339 Portobello Rd, W10 5SA
Breakfast served 8am-5pm Mon-Sat.
