Maggie Maggie Maggie! Out out out (in January)!
Sympathy for the devil, indeed. Meryl Streep dons the wire-wool wig to play our erstwhile overlord, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in ‘The Iron Lady’, which is set for release on January 6 2012. The film is already controversial – is it an apologia for a decade of arrogance and misrule, or a worthy, ‘Downfall’-style attempt to get under the skin of a key historical figure? This first trailer certainly attempts to sell ‘The Iron Lady’ as an even-handed biopic, featuring footage from the poll tax riots, an admission of Maggie’s nationwide unpopularity and lots of shots of Dennis (Jim Broadbent) looking hard done by. But early reports suggest this might be misleading: many of those who have seen the film say that its allegiances lie firmly with its steely heroine. Well, they do say that history is written by the winners…
