Jewish Maternity Hospital demolition to go ahead

Posted at 3:00 pm, December 8, 2011 in News

Jewish Maternity HospitalDespite a campaign to save the first – and only surviving – Jewish Maternity Hospital in England, the Whitechapel building will be demolished this month. The former hospital, at 22-28 Underwood Road, was founded in 1911 by Alice Model, an East End heroine who was awarded an MBE in 1935 for her achievements as a social reformer. The housing association Peabody, which owns the building wants to turn it into social housing and says the state of the space makes it difficult to adapt into new homes. ‘The homes we provide here will help alleviate the severe housing shortage and enable families currently living in unsuitable temporary accommodation such as B&Bs and hostels to have a real home,’ said Neil Young from Peabody. Tower Hamlet Council said it will collect images and artefacts from the building for archive purposes. Rebecca Taylor
