Nick Waplington’s holy landscapes

Best Wank © Nick WaplingtonYes, you read that right . . . while Time Out cannot claim to have the key to peace in the Middle East we can point you in the direction of what must be one of the most original creative takes on the struggle between Israelis and Palestinians. ‘Best Wank’, pictured above, is the most obviously jocular piece in ‘Long Way Back From Nowhere: New Works From The Holy Land.’ Nick Waplington’s first London show in five years at Hackney’s See Studios, which opens this Saturday 10 December (to January 28). Arguably London’s preeminent contemporary photographer, Waplington first went to Israel/Palestine to take pictures (Time Out’s Michael Hodges has spent time with Waplington in the West Bank and Jerusalem recently) but over four years also produced this unique body of work. Other pieces include water heaters from illegal Jewish settlements, which the artist gave to Palestinians – i.e. the enemy – to paint – some of which show the bullet holes from where they were used for target practice.

For info, see seestudio.com; read Michael Hodges feature.
