Get advent-urous in Willesden Green

Opening an advent calendar is not only about the chocolate, but the childish excitement of what picture awaits me under the little cardboard door. Willesden Green is trying to replicate this festive feeling by transforming the shop windows on the High Road into a life-sized advent calendar, with a work of art for each day in the run up to Christmas. All the participating shops are independent, ranging from bakeries and bookstores to clothes and gift shops and it’s all part of the Mayor’s ‘Outer London Fund’ project to pull high street retailers together and regenerate loacl business. There may not be chocolate behind each window but on the 17/18 December there will be a treasure hunt, designer and poetry workshops, mince pies and mulled wine (if you haven’t already overdosed on this xmasy tipple). There’ll even be a traditional barbershop quartet performing outside the barbers. Jemma de Blanche
