It’s the final countdown to Christmas, and if you’re doing the mad dash to secure your last few outstanding presents, you could do worse than to visit The Temporium pop-up shop in Seven Dials (until December 24). We dropped in earlier this week and were pleased to discover a tiny food stall in the basement selling savoury treats under the name of Pom Pom Takoyaki – look out for the cheerful red and white pom-pom display and cake stands stacked with golf ball-shaped dough balls, both savoury and sweet. Basing their spherical treats on ‘takoyaki’, a Japanese street food of grilled octopus in a pancake-like batter shaped into balls, creators Hana and Tomo have developed a range of bites to delight: there’s a version filled with chopped frankfurters and topped with crispy onions, ketchup and mustard (natch), and sweet ones flavoured with earl grey, or matcha-hued wheatgrass. At 80p a pop (or £3.80 for five), they’re a cheap way to get your blood sugar levels up while tackling the shopping skirmishes. Expect to see Pom Pom popping up elsewhere in months to come.
