Best of 2011: pictures of the year – tributes to Amy Winehouse
The past year has been a momentous one for London: sit-ins, strikes, demonstrations, rioting and royal (as well as not so royal) snogs all hit the headlines during 2011. The year ahead promises much drama of its own (with the mayoral election in May and the Olympics in July for starters) but in the meantime here are some standout images from an unforgettable 12 months.

The death of Amy Winehouse leaves many Londoners devastated. A mountain of flowers, photos and other memorabilia starts to grow on the pavement outside her house in Camden as the news breaks. What a talent; what a waste.
