The past year has been a momentous one for London: sit-ins, strikes, demonstrations, rioting and royal (as well as not so royal) snogs all hit the headlines during 2011. The year ahead promises much drama of its own (with the mayoral election in May and the Olympics in July for starters) but in the meantime here are some standout images from an unforgettable 12 months.
St Paul’s Cathedral, EC4, October 15
Protesters at a tent city set up outside St Paul’s cathedral as part of the Occupy London Stock Exchange campaign, a global movement aiming to focus attention on social inequality and corporate greed. Weeks of wrangling between the protestors and the church resulted in the resignation if the canon, Giles Fraser, then the part-time chapiain, Fraser Syer and finally the dean, the Rt Rev Graeme Knowles. The camp still remains in place.
