The past year has been a momentous one for London: sit-ins, strikes, demonstrations, rioting and royal (as well as not so royal) snogs all hit the headlines during 2011. The year ahead promises much drama of its own (with the mayoral election in May and the Olympics in July for starters) but in the meantime here are some standout images from an unforgettable 12 months.

More than 500,000 protestors take to the streets in opposition to the government’s plans to reform public sector pensions. Schools close, refuse is left uncollected, and libraries and day-care centres close early as thousands of civil servants go on strike. A ‘damp squibb’? Not in London, Prime Minister.
