The past year has been a momentous one for London: sit-ins, strikes, demonstrations, rioting and royal (as well as not so royal) snogs all hit the headlines during 2011. The year ahead promises much drama of its own (with the mayoral election in May and the Olympics in July for starters) but in the meantime here are some standout images from an unforgettable 12 months.

They came, they saw, they cleaned. Local residents armed with brooms and Marigolds turn out in their droves across the capital to help clean up the streets and damaged property, following the wave of rioting that swept London and other parts of Britain for two days.
