A short but perfectly formed festival

Dead of NightJanuary is a quiet month for film festivals in the capital, with one notable exception: the London Short Film Festival, which kicks off on Friday 6 January at a multitude of venues including the ICA, Hackney Picturehouse, Curzon Mayfair, Rich Mix, Roxy and many others. Offering an epic quantity of the highest quality shorts (over 1,000 at last count, 800 of those from the UK), the main events are a loose grouping of 24 thematic categories with self-explanatory titles like ‘Lo-Budget Mayhem’, ‘Fucked-Up Love’, ‘Family Affairs’ and ‘Funny Shit’. Our picks of the fest are many, but we were particularly impressed by the ‘London Lives’ strand, featuring a handful of snapshots of this great city, and a screening of Ealing’s masterful portmanteau horror classic, ‘Dead of Night’.
