200 days to go. Wow, it seems like yesterday that London was selected as the host city for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was actually July 2005, which is pretty freaky when you really think about it. As the extremely-unofficial Time Out Olympics correspondent (I’ve just invented this title, hoping my boss doesn’t mind), I’m really excited about the Games. I’ve got some overpriced tickets to see some Beach Volleyball and Weightlifting and I’m already planning an Olympic Torch house party serving flame grilled burgers when the torch comes through Croydon.
I do sometimes get the feeling that I’m one of the few people to be really behind London 2012 though. Each time it comes up in conversation, there’s discontent about ticketing, over-bearing Olympic TV ads and the transport issues facing the capital when the greatest show on earth comes to town. Some people are even thinking about going on holiday or renting out their home during the busiest times. They provide pretty watertight arguments too.
One things for sure, there’s plenty of debate about the impact of the 2012 Olympic Games and that’s a good thing. Let’s just hope LOCOG get the next 200 days right and I’ve a few more allies in the pub. Or maybe I should just grab a pint with Seb Coe? Seb…? Tom Young
