Camden’s Roundhouse announced today that it has joined an international club of round venues – dubbed, with admirable mathematical precision, the 360° Network. It’s not just a social network though: the 13 venues, in the UK, Sweden, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy and the Netherlands, have jointly commissioned a new premiere from cult Canadian theatre wizard Robert Lepage. Part 1 of ‘Cartes’ will be created and presented in 4 parts between 2012 and 2015, each inspired by a different playing card suit. It will arrive at the Roundhouse in February 2013. Lepage’s last couple of UK premieres, ‘Totem’ with Cirque du Soleil and ‘The Blue Dragon’ at the Barbican, have been somewhat disappointing. Let’s hope that going round and round the world inspires him to return to the epic levels of invention that made him such a big arthouse name on the international circuit.
