‘Lockout’ takes the prison escape movie into outer space

Back in 1996, promoting the release of his high-octane sequel ‘Escape from LA’, genre legend John Carpenter was already talking about a third movie, provisionally titled ‘Escape from Earth’. Well, that movie never happened (largely because ‘Escape from LA’ was pretty awful), but this April 13, we get the next best thing. ‘Lockout’ stars Guy Pearce as a hotshot fixer (probably not called Snake Plissken) tasked with rescuing the President’s daughter from a maximum security jail in earth orbit. The idea is hardly original and the special effects may look a touch ropey, but there’s enough in this new trailer to get us properly excited, notably some explosive zero-gravity action, a suitably gritty and tightlipped turn from Pearce and a supporting role for generally awesome ‘This is England’ star Joe Gilgun as a crazed Irish criminal who kicks off a riot. In prison. In space. What’s not to love? Tom Huddleston
