Window display pays tribute to Derek Jarman
Radical gardener, gay activist, filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman would have turned 70 this week, were it not for the HIV he contracted and wore like a campaigning badge towards the end of his life in 1994. To celebrate the great man, a selection of his books, records and other ephemera will be on display in the window of Donlon Books on Broadway Market (until Feb 5), beneath a rolling projection of his Super 8 films. Hopefully they will include Jarman’s feature-length, punk-infused rave about the future of our own queen, ‘Jubilee’, which should be required viewing in this Diamond year of Her Majesty. If only this monarch of movie-making had lived longer.
