Last night we put on every item of clothes that we could find and braved the fierce cold for a spot of star gazing way up high in Greenwich. The Royal Observatory is hosting ‘Evenings with the Stars’ (nightly until February 18, including a romantic special for Valentine’s eve) where you can get an eyeful of the stars and planets and gawp at the view from the Prime Meridian while supping a hot chocolate. The night begins with a virtual tour of the sky cosily reclining in the Planetarium, followed by some chilly outdoor gazing through smallish telescopes at the moon and a few other planets (sadly you can’t see Uranus, so there goes that prime joke fodder). There are experts on hand to talk you through the vastness of outer space. Did you know there was a crater on the moon called Dave? No, us neither. The evening climaxes with an ascent into the dome to look through the huge giant telescope (below). Boldly go and book now. Sonya Barber
