Laura MarlingThis year, the revived BBC 6 Music celebrates its tenth birthday – and the fact that the latest RAJAR figures (as of February 2) show that 300,000 more ears are now tuned in than last year. To that end, in March BBC 6 Music are hosting a series of special radio sessions at Maida Vale and – on Friday March 16 – throwing a party at the Southbank Centre. Or to be precise, two parties. Accomplished young alt.folkie Laura Marling (above) plays the Purcell Room, with young, bluesy soul-pop chanteuse Lianne La Havas in support, while psychedelic pop don Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals takes to the stage at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. He’s supported by darkly dramatic-voiced singer-songwriter Anna Calvi, fast-rising pop eccentric Beth Jeans Houghton & the Hooves of Destiny, and more acts to be announced. And to think ‘The Powers That Be’ planned to shut 6 Music down…
