It was a silent night at the Baftas
Silent but deadly, the people’s favourite ‘The Artist’ saw off all rivals at the Baftas at the Royal Opera House on Sunday night (Feb 12), winning seven of its 12 nominations and making it the clear favourite to win both Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars on Sunday February 26. The French film’s closest rival was ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’, which won prizes for Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film, but the biggest disappointment for fans of this John Le Carre adaptation was no win in the Best Actor category for Gary Oldman and his portrayal of George Smiley. Let’s hope we see Oldman soon in the mooted next film in the series, ‘Smiley’s People’.
