The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival returns

Cloudburst

This coming week, the BFI Southbank plays host to the annual Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, celebrating movies made by (and often about) homosexual artists from around the world. This year’s highlights include opening film ‘Cloudburst’ (above), a ‘Thelma and Louise’ style road movie about a prickly, acerbic lesbian couple played by Olympia Dukakis and Benda Fricker, ‘Kiss Me’, a spicy Scandinavian romance, ‘Jobriath AD’, a bio-doc about the so-called ‘American Bowie’ and ‘This is What Love in Action Looks Like’, a furious look at the lies preached by dogmatic ‘pray the gay away’ religious lunatics. There’s also, as ever, a fistful of classic screenings, which this year include the muscular ‘Spartacus’ (‘snails or oysters?’), Dietrich looking downright dangerous in ‘Morocco’ and dubious weepie ‘Making Love’.
