Thought hops were just for flavouring beer? Think again. Once known as the ‘poor man’s asparagus’, young hop shoots are apparently great for cooking with too. So much so that the London Brewers’ Alliance, a non-profit organisation, is laying on a hop shoot festival this weekend (27-29 April) in celebration of the ancient links between London town and Kentish countryside. A band of volunteers will spend a day picking hop shoots on a farm in Kent. These will then be transported to some top-notch pubs across the capital, who will be up against the clock to produce the most interesting dishes. The organisers are relying on members of the public to tweet the serving times and verdicts, so this is your chance to get involved.
