Having toured the USA in 1971, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s smash musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is finally doing the same in Blighty – a brand new production comes to the O2 in September. Lloyd Webber specialises in choosing his leads via the medium of telly talent show these days, so the title role is yet to be cast: over the summer the same ITV audiences that recently declared a dog to be the most talented Briton will be electing a messiah via the medium of the new show ‘Superstar’. The rest of the casting consists of former Spice Girl Melanie C – who impressed so much in ‘Blood Brothers’ – who will play Mary Magdalene; comic genius and ‘Matilda the Musical’ songwriter Tim Minchin taking on the role of Judas Iscariot; and noisy breakfast DJ Chris Moyles playing King Herod. It all sounds completely over the top and delightfully bonkers: to see it for yourself you can buy tickets for the O2 show and all other UK dates via Time Out from 9am today (May 18).
