Clam bakes (where seafood is cooked over hot stones) are big in New England, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have one over here in Old England. And what better excuse for a US-style seafood picnic than the upcoming four-day weekend? Named in honour of the Queen, God Save the Clam will bring together the BBQ boys from Pitt Cue Co and the crew from seafoodies Rock Lobsta to serve up buckets of clams, cockles, mussels, crayfish and crab claws, plus meaty barbecue sides. There’s also beer from the Meantime Brewery boys, tequila cocktails, DJs, a sun deck and even an ice cream sundae bar. Advance tickets cost £40 and include three courses (BBQ pork strips, clam bake and sundae) and a beer or cocktail. Or if you’re just grazing, head to the no-bookings Shack Snack Bar, serving up the likes of corn dogs and a dish of blue lobster and crackling popcorn (known as…. wait for it…. ‘Smurf ‘n’ Turf’). As the boys from Pitt Cue Co put it, ‘This is going to be a great event and we love a party, so we’re doing this for purely shellfish reasons’. Arf arf.
