If the Queen of Hearts made some tarts, then why shouldn’t our fair old monarch get a slice of the cakey action? It is her Jubilee after all. Baking maestro Gerhard Jenne from Konditor & Cook will be creating one giant portrait of The Queen from 3,120 cakes (one for each week of her reign) at the Diamond Jubilee Festival in Battersea Park on Sunday June 3. There has already been a smaller trial with just 500 cakes (see above) which looks pretty sweet. The real deal will use over 83 dozen eggs, 200 packets of butter, 150 bags of sugar and 36 kg of marzipan, which will be made beforehand and then assembled on the day. And the icing on the cake? You’ll be able to join in and decorate the portrait’s fruit cake frame. If this has your mouth watering, fear not – the royal creation will subsequently be divided up and sold for charity.
