In 2009, artists Penelope Batley, Shelly Goldsmith and Julie Arkell, along with photographer Jason Oddy were granted access to the recently closed Bolingbroke Hospital in Wandsworth. Contemporary Applied Arts gallery is now showing the work in a free exhibition inspired from the things left in the empty building (from June 15-July 21), ranging from keepsakes, personal artefacts and clothing to official stationery and medical paraphernalia, all presented in the context of Oddy’s eerie photographic imagery. From the papier-mâché and knitted dolls, reconstructed piping sculpture to photographic images on clothing, it’s difficult not to appreciate the power of simple everyday objects when connected, however loosely, to our experiences in hospitals.
