For the past decade, Canadian Jamie Travis has been a filmmaker worth keeping an eye on. His beautifully designed short films – from 2003’s ‘Why the Anderson Children Didn’t Come to Dinner’, through the painstakingly perfect ‘Patterns’ trilogy to 2009’s brilliantly sinister ‘The Armoire’ – showcase a filmmaker with an unerring eye for the unusual. The obvious names to drop would be David Lynch and Wes Anderson, though Travis has a finicky, edge-of-camp eeriness all his own. So imagine our surprise when his debut feature film has turned out to be… a mainstream sex comedy. ‘For a Good Time, Call…’ stars Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller (who also co-scripted) as young New Yorkers who turn to phone sex to fund their uptown lifestyle. The trailer is clearly pitching to the bad-taste crowd – there are shades of Judd Apatow, and Kevin Smith’s vile ‘Zack and Miri Make a Porno’ – but it’s indisputably funny, and we trust Travis to make something with a little more depth and class than your average foulmouthed romp.
There’s no UK release date yet, but keep an eye on timeout.com/film for info.
