Recently, we dedicated some much needed love to the humble shop front. The mostly ignored and often neglected feature of everyday life has also taken centre stage at Alan Dein’s photo exhibition ‘After you’ve gone, East End Shop Fronts, 1988’ at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archive. The Radio 4 broadcaster captured the diminishing and decaying shops of Stepney on film before their imminent disappearance from the world and now over 250 of the images are available to the public. These relics of what-once-was are displayed alongside archive material and contemporary images of the buildings today. The exhibition closes on July 12 with Saturday showings on June 23 and July 7.
