We’ve been dubious about this Colin Farrell-fronted, Mars-free remake of Paul Verhoeven’s ultraviolent space satire ‘Total Recall’ for a while now, but something in the new trailer has got our interest piqued. Could it be set in London? A future London, obviously, where ‘Minority Report’-style automatic cars have replaced black cabs, and bobbies on the beat look suspiciously like American secret service agents. But keep your eyes peeled, and you might spot a few familiar landmarks – traffic lights, red double-decker buses, and yes, that’s definitely Big Ben popping up over Colin’s shoulder about half way through. Obviously all this could be part of some artificially induced nightmare poor Col is suffering, but perhaps not. Otherwise, the trailer doesn’t really float our boat: director Len Wiseman (‘Underworld’) has an atrocious track record, the whole thing looks drenched in soupy CGI, and the constant nods to Verhoeven’s original (three-breasted hookers, guys hanging off elevators, whole lines of dialogue) look tacky. Judge for yourself when the film’s released on Aug 29. Or, if you prefer, you can check out the original when it’s re-released into cinemas next week.
