For the seasoned tube traveller, the intricate and complicated underground map can be as simple as ABC. It’s quite remarkable how a graph-like image can transcend words making lines, stops and accessibility instantly recognisable. Artist, Tim Fishlock, wanted to push the boundaries of this pictorial shorthand and form a recognisable alphabet using the bends and shapes in the map. This novel map not only shows the range of shapes within our tube system, but also that the lines and areas are so ingrained in the minds of Londoners. This, along with many other interesting alternative tube maps can be viewed at the Mind the Gap exhibition at the London Transport museum. Carly-Ann Clements
