As it isn’t a very common sport over this side of the pond, you could be forgiven for getting handball mixed up with Dodgeball. Now, we don’t condone you picking up a ball and lobbing it around your office, but team GB are hoping that this year’s Olympic effort will lead to more interest in the sport. To avoid mixing up your ball-based sports, we’ve got some facts to clear things up.
Converted: Fast, physical and with more goals in a match than Lionel Messi scores in a month… no wonder it’s the second most popular sport in Europe.
Confused: Football for cheats.
Street cred: More than 30 million people play handball worldwide, according to the International Handball Federation. In Britain, the number of participants is closer to 30.
Almost useless fact: Handball was the first sport to sell out at the last two Olympic games.
Do say: ‘Manchester United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel started off as a handball player; I might do some Premier League scouting.’
Don’t say: ‘Handball!’
