Free jazz anyone? Don’t panic, we’re not talking about the skronking howl of avant-garde greats like Ornette Coleman. We mean jazz, for free. Uh huh, now you’re interested… Having completed a much raved-about residency at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in February, American jazz singer and side-flap aficionado Gregory Porter returns for a one-off show next Tuesday 24th and you can go for absolutely nothing courtesy of Time Out and Pizza Express. With a rich tenor voice that’s positively dripping in raw, bloody soul and tunes that lean on the toe-tapping, funkier side of jazz, Porter’s appeal is quickly outgrowing the confines of the Transatlantic jazz scene, making this a rare opportunity to see him do his thing at such close quarters.
