Fringe benefits: Camden is much closer than Edinburgh
The Edinburgh Fringe starts this week, which may pose a problem for patriotic souls who’d rather stay in London and bask in the glow of the Olympics than head north of the border to get goofy on soss and stand-up. Fortunately the Camden Fringe is back for its seventh year, and while only a dangerous lunatic would suggest it’s a serious rival to its Scotch cousin, it’s certainly not without its charms. Comedy-wise, the best stuff happens on either side of Edinburgh, but for theatre fans looking for a walk on the wild side there’s plenty worth exploring: it’s incredibly expensive to take a theatre show to Auld Reekie, and a lot of genuinely hot young companies simply can’t afford it, which means they stick around down here.
