Some people will pick one side of London and defend it to the death, but Eugene McGuiness isn’t fussy. Liverpudlian by breeding and Northern Irish by descent, the singer-songwriter’s a Londoner by birth and this August he’s taking his cowlick on a citywide tour to launch his new album ‘The Invitation to the Voyage’ (Domino, August 6). Later in the month he’ll hit north (Proud Galleries, Chalk Farm, August 9), east (Birthdays, Dalston, August 23), and west London (Notting Hill Arts Club, August 29), but it all kicks off this Friday August 3 at Corsica Studios. Expect slick vintage sounds and leather jackets. This isn’t just The Eugene McGuinness Roadshow, though – it’s a launch for the seventh In The Woods festival, set in a secret sylvan location somewhere in the Green Belt on September 1 and featuring an impressive flock of potential Next Big Things – previous acts have included Alt-J, Lianne la Havas, and Anna Calvi. Festival tickets are sold out, but this launch is a chance for you to get your hands on some: the organisers are giving out four pairs to lucky audience members. Support comes from former ITW acts Post War Years (atmospheric synthpop) and Clout! (eccentric, eclectic electronica) as well as festival organisers Laurel Collective, plus a whole host of DJs including Micachu/Raisa K (of Micachu and the Shapes) and Time Out’s very own Goldbars.
